A sad report about a young woman, Katherine Nairn, from Forfar, was married to a man twice her age. It was said that she took her brother-in-law, Patrick, as a lover. Patrick was a solder in the 89th Regiment of Foot. Katherine and Patrick were accused of murder, incest and adultery – all capital offences in 1765. Living with Katherine and her husband was the youngest brother, Alexander, and his mistress, Anne Clark a former prostitute. Clark’s testimony runs for 18 pages in the report of the trial but is of a somewhat dubious nature as she was aware of the fact that her lover would inherit all if his brother and sister-in-law were executed. A guilty verdict was handed down and Patrick was executed but Katherine was pregnant and was saved.
